 SafeRx & OPIOID EDUCATION

We have all had that disheartening experience where something we say or do prompts a stiffening, withdrawal, or some other negative emotional response in another. Inadvertently, we created a gap or caused unintended harm simply out of lack of awareness of our unconscious judgements and biases. As humans, we’re all shaped by judgements and biases fed to us by the media, our families, our schools and workplaces, and other sources. If we’re unaware of these, they can lead to patterns of communicating and interacting at odds with our intention as healthcare professionals: to promote healing.

In this hour-long video, you’ll learn about the primary obstacles to making strong connections and communicating deep care and you’ll hear about effective practices for overcoming these obstacles. You’ll emerge with new insights and practices that help you manage your own unconscious biases and convey empathy. Why is this important? Because evidence suggests that empathy is among the strongest contributors to more satisfying patient-provider interactions and improved health outcomes.

Follow along the video using this handout, designed to support you to reflect on your own experiences and identify a pathway toward increased empathy and connection, with your colleagues, patients, and others in your life.
